How do I create a GeoCV 3D Tour? How does the process look like?

Short answer

  • We ship you a GeoCV Scanner Kit. It includes GeoCV Scanner, which includes a smartphone with pre-installed GeoCV Scanner App. Place your GeoCV Scanner on a tripod.
  • Place the tripod consequently in multiple spots in the space. At each spot a 3D scan and a 360° panorama will be automatically captured and stitched into a preliminary 3D model in real-time, so you can make sure you captured all the rooms. Capturing takes 25-45 minutes per 1,000 sqft depending on the layout and whether the space is furnished or empty.
  • Upload data to GeoCV Cloud with a single tap in the Scanner App. Processing is done automatically. Your GeoCV 3D Tour will be ready in several hours. Your floor plan will be ready in 24 hours after the 3D tour.
  • Use GeoCV Tour Editor to edit your GeoCV 3D Tours: add description and contact info, add pins and highlights, customize GeoCV Viewer and white label. Optionally download floor plans with dimensions, still photos, 3D model and 360° panoramas.

More details

After you sign the contract and pay the invoice, we ship you a GeoCV Scanner Kit with all the accessories in a carrying case. The smartphone is already included, and we do not support your own phone yet. You will need only a regular tripod extra. GeoCV Scanner App comes pre-installed on the smartphone and can be automatically updated.

Place your GeoCV Scanner on a tripod, turn it on, launch GeoCV Scanner App. Create a new Scene (project) just by typing in its name. Put a tripod with GeoCV Scanner at any place in the space, e.g. near the entrance. Press “Capture” button in GeoCV Scanner App. GeoCV Scanner will automatically make a 360° spin and capture a 3D scan - a 360° panorama with associated depth (geometrical data). It only takes 39 seconds. You see a top-down view of a 3D model (looks similar to floor plan), so you can understand what has been captured from this spot. One scan covers an area of up to 15 feet (5 meters) radius.

Move the tripod to another spot, usually up to 10 feet (3 meters) away from the previous one. Press “Capture” button again. A new 3D scan will be automatically captured from this spot. It will be automatically aligned to the previous one. You will see a merged 3D model. Repeat this process of moving a tripod to a new spot, pressing “Capture” button and reviewing the result, until the whole space is covered.

Understanding where to move the tripod next is easy. Preserve direct line of sight between consequent spots, so users can navigate between them in GeoCV Viewer. You might need to do some extra spots to avoid large unscanned areas, e.g. occluded by furniture. Leaving smaller holes is fine since they will be filled in automatically during processing in GeoCV Cloud.

If there are mirrors in the space they should be marked up with a simple line tool in GeoCV Scanner App during capturing. You can also markup windows and cut unnecessary parts of 3D model to make it look better.

It takes 25-45 minutes to capture 1,000 sqft. Thus capturing a regular 2,500 sqft home could take 1-2 hours. Capturing time depends on the layout (spacious layouts are faster to capture), whether the space is empty or furnished (empty spaces are faster to capture) and how densely you scan (denser scanning results in higher quality 3D scan but is optional).

When you finish capturing, press “Upload” button in GeoCV Scanner App, and the data will be compressed and sent to GeoCV Cloud for processing. Processing of 3D tour is done fully automatically. You will get an email notification when it is ready. Turnaround time depends on the number of spots, and is several hours on average. Floor plan extraction from 3D tour is done in semi-automated fashion and adds up to 24 hours on top of 3D tour turnaround time. 3D tour is available for editing and sharing first, then the floor plan is added to it.

You can login to GeoCV Tour Editor to view, edit and share your GeoCV 3D Tours:

  • Download the floor plan, the 3D model, 360° panoramas.
  • Extract still photos from 360° panoramas and download them.
  • Add space description, listing information, contact information, customer branding.
  • Add Pins, i.e. annotations including text, images and videos and custom HTML.
  • Add Highlights, i.e. particular views in the tour as well Viewpoints (standalone 360° panoramas such as for amenities).
  • Hide some panoramas, hide some GeoCV Viewer controls and navigation modes, set starting position.
  • Setup white labeled or branded version.

How is GeoCV different from other 3D and 360° virtual tours?

Short answer

  • In comparison to another 3D+360° tours solution GeoCV uses a smartphone with a depth camera instead of expensive proprietary camera, allows white labeling, self-hosting, copyrights ownership, content editing, offers unlimited plan and highly customizable viewer.
  • In comparison to traditional 360° virtual tours GeoCV provides a realistic 3D model to show the layout, smooth transitions between high-quality panoramas, an accurate floor plan, easy-to-use solution with real-time feedback not requiring special skills for capturing.

More details

GeoCV is one of only two 3D+360° virtual tours solution. We differentiate ourselves by:

  • Using a smartphone with a 3D camera for capturing making our solution more accessible and easier to upgrade.
  • Giving control in hands of our customers with white labeling, self-hosting, copyrights ownership, content editing and abilities to brand and customize the viewing experience.
  • Features like floor plan overlay in 3D viewer, minimap, integration of exterior 3D+360° content captured with a drone, virtually staged 3D tours, etc.

GeoCV 3D Tours are very much different from traditional 360° virtual tours:

  • A realistic 3D scan of the space has wow effect, is very engaging and allows understanding layout of the space easily without necessity to walk through the whole space.
  • Transitions between high-resolution HDR (High Dynamic Range) 360° panoramas are smooth because of the underlying geometry layer, without jumps from room to room with loss of context.
  • A floor plan with accurate dimensions is robustly extracted from the 3D scan, it is based on millions of 3D measurements vs a few reference measurements, and thus is not prone to human errors.
  • Real-time feedback during capturing shows a top-down view of a preliminary 3D scan, which allows user not to forget to scan any room and guarantees the “what you see is what you get” result.
  • GeoCV solution is fast to train and easy to use, no special skills like DSLR camera knowledge are required.

Finally, GeoCV provides photorealistic 3D+360° tours of existing spaces captured as is, it is not a rendering.

How long does it take to capture?

Short answer

It takes 25-45 minutes to capture 1,000 sqft (~100 sq meters) depending on the layout and whether it’s furnished or empty.

More details

Capturing a regular 2,500 sqft home could take 1-2 hours. Capturing time depends on the layout (spacious layouts are faster to capture), whether the space is empty or furnished (empty spaces are faster to capture) and how densely you scan (denser scanning results in higher quality 3D scan but is optional).

Capturing each 3D scan takes 39 seconds, and it takes on average 6 seconds for real-time processing during capturing. Add a bit of time to move the tripod from spot to spot, and to interact with GeoCV Scanner App, e.g. for marking up mirrors.

Is GeoCV solution easy to be trained for? How do I get trained?

Yes, GeoCV solution is very easy and fast to learn. We can provide remote training via a video conference, which takes 30-60 minutes. We are also working on video tutorials for self-training and will share them when they are ready.

Is GeoCV solution easy to use? Do I require photography or 3D skills?

Short answer

GeoCV solution is very easy to use. It doesn’t require special skills.

More details

GeoCV solution doesn’t require photography, 3D design, architecture, floor plans drafting or any other special skills. If you can use a smartphone, you can use GeoCV solution.

GeoCV Scanner App provides real-time feedback, so you see a preliminary 3D scan (view from the top), so you can easily understand what areas have been captured during scanning. The app also provides feedback if 3D scans have not been aligned and suggests tips.

Do I need to markup mirrors and windows during capturing? Are there any other manual steps like linking panoramas?

Short answer

It is required to markup mirrors and windows during capturing. You can also optionally cut unnecessary areas of 3D model. Stitching and alignment of 3D scans and 360° panoramas is done automatically. No other routine manual steps are required.

More details

It is required to markup mirrors during capturing, otherwise it confuses our algorithms for alignment of 3D scans and leaves unrealistic geometry in mirror reflections, which degrades the quality of 3D scan. It is also highly recommended to markup windows to make their geometry flat.

What spaces can be captured using GeoCV solution?

Short answer

Interior spaces up to 20,000 sqft (approximately 2,000 sq meters) except wide open large empty areas and crowded spaces. GeoCV is not useful for capturing very large spaces like warehouses, shopping malls, airports; outdoor areas such as city blocks, construction sites; mm-cm accuracy demanding applications.

More details

GeoCV solution is great for capturing interior spaces up to 10,000 - 20,000 sqft (approximately 1,000 - 2,000 sq meters) except wide open large empty areas. Here is an example of a 23,000 sqft (approximately 2,070 sq meters) mansion: https://geocv.com/premiumpoint

Capturing of large empty areas is limited in particular because of the limited range of depth camera, which is around 15 feet (5 meters). Such exceptional areas of reasonable size can be captured using QR codes placed on the floor, walls and columns around the area. QR codes could be then removed from 360° panoramas manually.

GeoCV solution is not useful for capturing:

  • Objects, people and anything smaller than a closet or a room
  • Large outdoor spaces, e.g. a stadium or a city block
  • Large interior spaces, e.g. an industrial warehouse
  • Wide open large empty spaces, e.g. a 50,000 sqft (approximately 4,500 sq meters) floor of an office building in shell state
  • Large spaces, which combine indoor and outdoor, e.g. construction sites
  • Anything demanding cm or mm accuracy of measurements
  • Crowded spaces
Can I capture outdoor?

Outdoor areas can be captured:

  • Regularly in 3D+360° without bright sun, e.g. in shade, cloudy weather, twilight. Example: https://geocv.com/238356thdr
  • As Viewpoints (standalone 360° panoramas without 3D geometry) and used as Highlights in GeoCV Viewer, in any lighting conditions. Example: https://geocv.com/39e29st14b

Capturing outdoor is mainly a limitation of the infrared depth camera we are currently using.

How can I add an exterior 3D scan and aerial 360° panoramas captured with a drone? How much does it cost?

Short answer

You can shoot aerial imagery using a regular drone following our guidelines. We then process them into an exterior 3D scan and optionally 360° panoramas using photogrammetry, and integrate them into your GeoCV 3D Tour. Pricing is on project basis and starts from several hundred USD. Example: http://bit.ly/geocvdrone

More details

Incorporation of exterior 3D scans and aerial 360° panoramas captured with a drone is our premium feature, which is not yet included into subscription and has project-base pricing.

It works as follows:

  • You need a regular drone with a good enough camera (for example, we used Phantom 4 Pro V2.0).
  • Flight automation software such as DroneDeploy is recommended. You should be also able to fly manually.
  • We provide you guidelines for shooting: http://bit.ly/geocv-drone-manual. You shoot and send us the images.
  • We use photogrammetry to stitch them into a 3D scan and optionally align 360 images to the 3D scan.
  • We align the exterior 3D scan with the interior 3D scan, and import all the content into a GeoCV 3D Tour.

Turnaround time from our side is several business days.

More Questions ↓
What is the battery life of GeoCV Scanner?

Short answer

GeoCV Scanner could last for up to 3-4 hours (up to 135-180 spots) of continuous scanning on a single charge. It is enough for capturing a few small spaces, a couple of medium-sized spaces, or a single large space.

More details

There are three pieces of hardware requiring power in GeoCV Scanner.

  • Panohead is powered by 2 replaceable rechargeable batteries of 18650 type. We provide 4 rechargeable batteries in the Kit, so when the first pair of batteries is discharged, you can use the second pair of batteries.
  • Smartphone could be recharged while you commute between shoots or have a lunch, in particular, using a mobile power bank.
  • Depth camera is by default charged from the smartphone, and can be optionally charged from the Panohead using black cable included in the Kit.

What is the file size for captured data to be uploaded into GeoCV Cloud for processing?

Short answer

Several GB per 3D tour.

More details

Each panorama is around 90 MB. There are on average 30 panoramas per 1,000 sqft.

How many 3D tours fit in GeoCV Scanner storage? How do I know how much space is left?

Short answer

It depends on number of panoramas and is in ballpark of a dozen. GeoCV Scanner App shows you remaining number of panoramas in real-time during capturing.

More details

GeoCV Scanner includes Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone with 64 GB capacity, which fits up to 550 panoramas.

Can I capture multiple stories spaces?

Short answer

Yes. Example: https://geocv.com/42white-ph

More details

You can add multiple floors in GeoCV Scanner App during capturing. During processing, the 3D scan is automatically segmented into multiple floors, so users can see all the floors altogether as well as each floor individually in GeoCV Viewer. Floor plans are extracted per each floor.

Does GeoCV solution captures HDR (High Dynamic Range) imagery?

Short answer

Yes.

More details

We capture multiple brackets covering a very wide dynamic range, and our software automatically fuses these images into a HDR image, so that both dark interior and bright exterior views are clearly visible without clipped blacked areas and washed out windows, with great level of detail in highlights and shadows.

What lighting conditions I can capture in? Is special lighting required?

You can capture in a wide range of lighting conditions from night views to brightest spaces because we capture multiple exposures and automatically stitch them into a single HDR (High Dynamic Range) image, which clearly shows both dark room interior and bright view behind the window. No special lighting or flash is required.

Can I preview captured 360° panoramas during scanning?

Short answer

Yes.

More details

You can preview low-resolution 360° panoramas without post-processing during capturing. Final seamlessly stiched high-resolution HDR (High Dynamic Range) 360° panoramas with all color corrections applied are produced in GeoCV Cloud.

Can I capture standalone 360° panoramas which are not physically linked to the main space, e.g. views of amenities?

Short answer

Yes.

More details

GeoCV Scanner App allows you to capture standalone 360° panoramas without 3D geometry. They are called Viewpoints. Viewpoints are not merged with the 3D model, but are shown as Highlights. Example: https://geocv.com/462littletimber

Can I create a GeoCV 3D Tour for a space that does not exist yet, e.g. pre-built?

Short answer

No.

More details

GeoCV solution allows you to capture existing spaces as is. We can then virtually stage this space, i.e. augment it with virtual furniture (example: https://geocv.com/staging). Our solution does not allow creating rendered 3D tours of spaces, which do not exist.

Download example

How accurate floor plan dimensions are?

Short answer

We can’t guarantee any particular accuracy, but usually it is within 98% of the measured distance.

More details

Floor plans are extracted from 3D scans, which are generated from millions of 3D measurements using our advanced software. But inaccuracies are still present. Depth cameras accuracy degrade with distance. When multiple scans are aligned, errors accumulate as the captured space grows. Thus we can’t guarantee any metrical accuracy, e.g. number of mm, cm or inches, and accuracy depends on the measured distance.

Usual 98% accuracy is good enough for room dimensions and square footage estimation in floor plans. It might not be good enough for architectural applications like estimating size of windows for precise installation.

Can I extract unlimited print-quality HDR still photos from a GeoCV 3D Tour?

This feature is currently in development and will be available shortly

How fast do GeoCV 3D Tours load?

Short answer

It depends on the speed of user’s Internet connection, and is usually only a few seconds for initial loading when GeoCV 3D Tour becomes interactive. Further data is loaded on-demand depending on which 360° panoramas of the 3D tour user looks at.

More details

GeoCV Viewer is optimized to provide as fast as possible loading speed even for slow connections. While the whole 3D tour data can weigh hundreds of MB, only a few MB are downloaded before interaction with GeoCV Viewer starts, and only a few dozens MB are downloaded when user walks through the space.

We use caching, so loading GeoCV 3D Tour second and further times in the same browser is usually faster than the first time. We use Amazon CloudFront CDN (Content Delivery Network), which optimizes loading time for different geographical locations.
